On Thursday 4th September, I had the pleasure of reading at Flash Fiction Armagh, held as part of the Armagh Food and Cider Festival (video below).

The event took place in the beautiful surroundings of Crannagael House, a historic venue that lent real atmosphere to an evening of stories, laughter, and good company.

Always a fantastic evening!
Always a fantastic evening!

I read my piece Polished Black Size Elevens, a story close to my heart — a quiet meditation on memory, love, and the small rituals that tie us to those we’ve lost. This was my third time reading at Flash Fiction Armagh, and each time I’m struck by how welcoming and generous the audience is, and how carefully the event is curated.

Always more nervous when there’s family there to listen!

The evening was made all the more special because my aunt, Helena Stuart, was one of the other readers. To share a stage with her, both of us offering our words to the same gathering, was a rare and meaningful experience — a reminder of how stories connect us across family as well as community.

An added bonus was sharing the stage with fellow Freedom To Write member Adeline Henry, who read a fabulous piece about a young farmers dance.

Flash Fiction Armagh is organised by the brilliant Byddi Lee and Rachel Toner, whose dedication and energy have created something really valuable for writers and readers alike in Armagh. I’m very grateful to them for the opportunity, and to everyone who came along on the night.
